Hurstwood Farm Piano Studios is proud to announce that at the next Frankfurt Music Fare (March 24/27) we will show the new “Evolution piano”
This is the outcome of many years of research and development into classical acoustic piano design based on Darwinian natural selection of advantageous change.
We focussed on the unfulfilled wish list of artists who wanted something better than is currently offered by the big builders whose designs have been conceptually stagnant for over a century
The key factors we selected were:-
1.Improved Artist / instrument interface (Ease of playing and better response. Giving the artist a feeling of security.)
2. Longer sustain of melody notes.
3 Clarity and uniformity of sound over the registers. (Consistent sound quality)
4.A larger dynamic range. (Reliable playing from a whisper to massive sound Ability to cut through a modern orchestra in concerto playing.)
5 Immediacy. (The artist senses a sharp wave front of sound as the hammer strikes. Rapid development of the fundamental frequency sound)
6.Preservation of the warm so called German sound quality. (Control and gradation of harmonic content.).
7 Durability without degradation of performance (Avoidance of soundboard splitting and dome collapse. An action that does not change or become stiff in performance with climate change.)
8. Resistance to adverse climate. (Tolerance of extreme humidity conditions without structural damage.)..
As with nature’s living species future pianos will universally incorporate these advantages or they, and classical music with them, will become as extinct as the dynosaurs.
We do not pretend the Evolution piano at Frankfurt is the final perfect concept but we do claim it takes piano performance a huge step forward. Evolution is a continuous process. The piano’s successors are already under study with weight reduction and a more robust keyboard being two of several objectives.
Evolution Pianos will be based on frames and cases from the Feurich and Steingraeber range. The latter being the flagship version.

Phoenix success acknowledged.
Steingraeber-Phoenix. "The greatest advance in piano technology for over a century."........ Fandrich.. piano consultant technician USA.
Please see our news updates section for technical opinions written by a US technician after he had carried out tests on Phoenix pianos. These verify our own analyses very closely.
Buying a piano
Do not even dream of buying another piano until you have tried our new carbon fibre pianos. These instruments are some of the finest and most technically advanced pianos ever made. The baby grand with carbon fibre board is said by professionals to match most concert grands for performance. They say "It is difficult to believe you are not sitting in front of 3 meters of piano with this tiny instrument"
There is a new technical paper discussing the Revolution that is happening in piano design. This is in the News Updates section of this website. It is priority reading for anyone seeking a fine new piano. Some of the small new technology pianos are comparable with traditional concert grand instruments yet cost only a fraction as much. Do not waste your money buying a big dynasaur instrument.
"Which Piano?"
See our News Updates section. This article is intended to help guide buyers through the minefield of seeking the right pian . Buying a used piano in many outlets can encapsulate all the hazards of buying a used car,,, and more. It is difficult for new buyers to get informed and unbiased advice and this article is intended to make that available. We are always delighted to discuss client's special interests and advise on piano purchase, what to look (and look out)for and how to recognise some of the purchasing pitfalls, deficiencies and buyers risks in buying both new and renovated pianos offered for sale in the UK market. Buying a piano can be a lottery for the unwary.
Bosendorfer
We no longer offer new Bosendorfer but we plan to continue to maintain a stock of all models of relatively new finely and professionally renovated and restored Bosendorfer pianos for which we are finding a strong demand based on our reputation for excellence in re-build work . These are carefully selected instruments bought mostly from private ownership and meticulously renovated to look and perform superbly. They are priced modestly at levels which compare very favourably.
If you are a Bosendorfer owner and want your piano restored to these standards, please contact us. Pianos dated from 1950 to 2003 are some of the finest pianos built by Bosendorfer and fully justify investment for restoration. We specially recommend restoration of models 130(upright) and grands models 200, 225 and 290 from these years.
We have had good experience of retrofitting the Phoenix system to Bosendorfer pianos. The upper registers which some regard as having short and weak sound , respond especially well.
Carbon fibre is new Black Beauty Article from Musical Opinion
The World's first production grand piano with carbon fibre soundboard technology by Hurstwood Farm Pianos built by Steingraeber-Phoenix was shown at the 2008 Frankfurt Music Fair.
From the Editor of Musical Opinion Two years ago we wrote an exclusive article announcing the new concept Steingraeber-Phoenix pianos with bridge agraffe under the title "Stunning Blonde Enraptures the Piano World". At the invitation of Richard Dain of Hurstwood Farm Piano Studios we had listened to a recording being made by Eric Himy from the USA on this uniquely beautiful natural rosewood piano. *
That recording has itself been a land mark in piano music, gaining the accolade of becoming BBC Music Magazine's Recording of the Month in America with double 5 star rating but also gaining the comment from American critic Dave Holmes of Audio Emporium "This is likely to be the best sounding piano disc you have yet purchased."
A year later we announced a "New Baby for the Steingraeber- Phoenix range". This little piano packs a huge punch resulting from further development of the Hurstwood Farm Studios concept of bridge agraffes which enable elimination of acoustically restrictive down bearing loads on the sound board. Most people who play these tiny 170 cm baby grands compare their performance to that of a traditional seven foot six inch half concert grand.

Our Studio wins premier piano design award Hurstwood Farm's new design of Steingraeber-Phoenix concert grand piano has just won the prestigious Bavarian State Prize for Innovation in Arts and Crafts. The Award comes with a Scroll of Honour signed by the Bavarian State Prime Minister.
Technicians' Verdict on Steingraeber The well known Larry Fines Piano Book that classifies different makes of piano for quality and performance now lists Steingraeber as a "Tier 1 Class A" piano alongside Steinway (Hamburg), Fazioli and Bosendorfer. The classification is a statistical assessment of several hundred technicians, and covers everything from build quality to performance and artist approval. The inclusion is accompanied by positive comment by Fine himself. .
Recording Triumph for Hurstwood Farm and Phoenix We have had some very special praise from two top international CD critics on the sound of Steingraeber -Phoenix. This first commercial recording of Steingraeber-Phoenix was made at the Farm by Eric Himy playing Schumann. (See the article in Musical Opinion)
"We are told this is the first recording of the new Steingraeber-Phoenix Pianos......The sound is of extraordinary richness but also of refinement." Michael Tanner BBC Music Magazine. Rating double 5-star
"This new recording is likely to be the best sounding piano disc you have yet purchased! Recorded on the new Steingraeber-Phoenix piano the sound is weighty and convincing." Dave Holmes of Audio Emporium (USA)
